Earth Weekend 2008

Park School's Earth Week celebration culminated in what we hope will become an annual Earth Weekend for the Park community. On Saturday, several families joined with Boston-based non-profits to plant 50 trees in a playground in Dorchester. On Sunday, Lower School families spent an afternoon together, first at Allandale Farm where 30 children planted a pumpkin patch, climbed trees, toured the greenhouse and walked the farm to learn about growing organic crops.

Then, at Park School, 40 children painted, hammered and screwed together birdhouses (under the gentle supervision of Mr. Mario) and enjoyed a tour of Park's campus (guided by science teacher Brian Cassie) to learn about interesting native and non-native plant species and birds. We ended the magical afternoon under a tree at the side of the school where, as if scripted, a large male redtail hawk landed directly above us for a visit.

One parent summed up that "The time at Allandale Farm and Park reminded me of several things: how nice it is to spend time with friends from Park; how much kids love dirt, sticks, trees, hammers, paint, and unstructured play outside; what wonderful outdoor resources we have so close by; how I love to watch my children play; and how I love to spend entire days with my kids!"
